313km cycling route starting from Llandrindod. Controls at Llanidloes and Newtown, plus 3 information controls.
A challenging 300km event for those that prefer to keep rough tracks to a minimum but still wish to embrace rider self-sufficiency on a challenging route. The ride does feature two rough sections. Starting in Llandrindod and heading north the first rough section (of a couple of km) is near to the River Wye shortly after Newbridge on Wye on NCR 8 . You then make your way up and through the Elan Valley to Cwmystwyth. Climbing out of the Cwmystwyth valley on the hilly and degraded road surface of NCR 818 through the upper Wye Valley to the small market town Llanidloes. Climbing through the pretty Hafron Forest passing the Dylife gorge and dropping down through Machynlleth. Continuing from Tywyn, you encounter the second rough track on a traffic free section of NCR 82 in the hills towards Dolgellau (see the website header image). Rising up and passing Cross Foxes as you prepare for the descent to Dinas Mawddwy. The ride then climbs up the wall that is Bwlch-y-Goes en-route to Lake Bala. Onward through picturesque oak woods in preparation to ascend Hirnaunt Pass, the reward – a long descent to Lake Vyrnwy. After a short rest the route crosses to the Rhyd to pick-up a direct route to Newtown. Leaving Newtown on the gentle climb towards Arrivee, the ride finishes with a downhill run into Llandrindod.
Two rough sections, multiple steep climbs and descents, long sections in later stages with no available services and little access to the railway network for self-extraction. This is an adventurous route.
Think again about entering this event if you have little experience of riding hilly 200km events or if you normally use the full time allowance to ride flatter 300km events. Depending on your pace, plan to pack night-time supplies.
Can be ridden on 28c tyres if you’re careful on the rough sections. Below 28c not advised. But that’s your call.
Insiders tip – with a little planning you could re-route around the rough sections and incur only a small distance penalty. But is that cheating? (Actually it’s not in the eyes of AUK but we think it’s less fun).
